Twist is a hard wearing cut pile for stairs, halls and busy rooms. Loop pile is textured and durable but not ideal with pets that catch claws. Saxony is a deep, soft cut pile for bedrooms and lounges where traffic is lighter.
Twist pile
The yarn is twisted tightly and cut, which gives a slightly rough, resilient surface that hides footmarks and vacuum lines. It is the default for hall, stairs and landing, and the safest all round choice in a family house.
Loop pile and Berber
The yarn stays as uncut loops, giving a textured, hard wearing surface with a distinctive look. It performs very well in hallways and busy rooms. The one caution is pets: a cat or dog claw can pull a loop, so it is not the first choice in a house with animals.
Saxony and deep pile
Longer cut fibres, soft and luxurious underfoot, and the most comfortable to walk on barefoot. It shows footprints and shading, and it crushes faster under heavy traffic, which is why it belongs in bedrooms and lounges rather than on the stairs.
