Underlay is stocked at both warehouses next to the rolls it goes under. Pick both, have them cut, and load up or book delivery.
Underlay is the part of a carpet job most people spend the least time on and notice the most afterwards. It decides how the carpet feels underfoot, how warm and quiet the room is, and how long the pile keeps its shape. It is also the line on a quote that is most often left vague.
We keep underlay in stock at Maidstone and Gillingham so you never have to buy the carpet in one place and chase the underlay somewhere else. Buying it right: four things to tell us
You do not need to know the technical names. These four answers are enough for the team to put the right underlay in front of you.
The room
A hallway or staircase takes far more wear than a spare bedroom and wants a firmer underlay.
The carpet
Bring or choose the carpet first. A heavy wool blend and a light budget twist do not want the same thing beneath them.
The floor
Boards or concrete, and whether there is underfloor heating, both change the choice.
The door gaps
Carpet and underlay together raise the floor. Check how much room is under your doors before you pick the thickest option.
Measured to the floor, not the carpet
Carpet comes off a fixed-width roll so you often buy more than the floor area. Underlay does not work that way: it only needs to cover the floor itself. That is why an honest quote shows the carpet metres and the underlay metres as two different numbers, and why we list underlay as its own line.
Supply only, or fitted
Plenty of our customers are fitters or confident DIYers buying supply only, and we sell the gripper, door bars, trims and adhesives alongside so the job is complete in one visit. If you want it fitted, we use trusted, fully vetted local fitters across Kent, and onsite measuring is available in most Kent areas.
Replacing underlay on its own
If a carpet is being lifted and relaid, or the old underlay has flattened, crumbled or gone hard, new underlay on its own is a sensible buy. Bring the room sizes and we will tell you how much you need.

- Yes. Underlay is sold on its own as well as with carpet, to the public and to the trade.
- How much underlay do I need?
- Underlay only needs to cover the floor, so it is worked out from the floor area of the room rather than the length of carpet. Send your room sizes and the team will work it out.
- Do you sell gripper and door bars too?
- Yes. We carry trims, adhesives and accessories alongside underlay, so a supply-only job can be bought in one trip.
- Is underlay included in carpet prices?
- Not usually, anywhere. We will show underlay as its own line on your quote so you can compare it fairly with any other quote.
- Can you deliver it with the carpet?
- Yes. Most in-stock items are delivered within 1 to 3 working days across Kent, or collect from either warehouse.
