Carpet is made and sold in long rolls, usually four metres wide. As a roll gets cut down for customer after customer, a point comes where what is left is too short to be sold as a full roll but far too good to waste. That tail is a roll end.

Nothing about the carpet has changed. It is the same yarn, the same twist, the same backing and the same guarantee as the metre that came off it an hour earlier. What has changed is our position: we need the tube out of the racking to make room for the next delivery. That is the entire reason roll ends are cheaper, and it is why they are the single best value thing in the building.
