Can you fit carpet yourself?

Yes for a small, square, low traffic room, and for most sheet vinyl in a bathroom or cloakroom. No for stairs, and usually not for large rooms, because stretching carpet properly needs a knee kicker, a power stretcher and practice.

Jobs a competent DIYer can do

A box room, a small square bedroom, a home office or a cupboard are all realistic. Sheet vinyl in a small bathroom is genuinely straightforward, because a 2m, 3m or 4m width usually covers it in one piece with no seam.

Jobs to leave to a fitter

Stairs, without exception. Getting carpet to sit tight around each nosing safely is a skill, and a badly fitted stair carpet is a trip hazard as well as an eyesore.

Large rooms are the other one. If carpet is not stretched properly it will ripple within months, and the tools to do it correctly cost more than the fitting would have.

What you need

Gripper, underlay, a sharp carpet knife with plenty of spare blades, a straight edge, a knee kicker, a bolster and door bars or trims. We stock all of it alongside the carpet, so it is one trip.

Buy a little more carpet than the floor area. Trimming to fit always consumes more than you expect the first time.

Common questions

Do you sell supply only?
Yes. Buy the carpet, underlay and accessories and fit it yourself, or have us arrange fitting.
Can I hire tools?
Knee kickers and stretchers are widely available to hire locally. It is worth it for anything beyond a small room.
What is the most common DIY mistake?
Not stretching enough, which shows up as ripples a few months later.
Do you fit, or is this a job for me?
Either. We work with trusted, fully vetted local fitters across Kent, and plenty of customers fit smaller rooms themselves and buy supply only.
Will you work out how much I need?
Yes. Bring your room measurements and the team will calculate quantities. Onsite measuring is also available in most Kent areas.
