How many years will I get out of this carpet?

You want realistic lifespans so you can work out the cost per year.

A light polypropylene in a busy area may be finished in five years, a mid range polyamide typically runs ten to fifteen, and a good wool blend in a domestic setting can pass twenty. Underlay, traffic, cleaning and sunlight decide which end of the range you land on.

Written for: Buyers weighing a cheaper carpet now against a better one that lasts.

Lifespan by fibre

Fibre sets the ceiling. Everything else decides whether you reach it. These are realistic domestic ranges rather than warranty numbers, based on carpet in normal family use.

The four things that decide the outcome

Two identical carpets in two houses can be five years apart at the end of their lives, and it is almost never the carpet's fault.

  • Underlay. A dense underlay stops the pile bottoming out and is the biggest single factor after fibre.
  • Traffic. A hall takes several times the footfall of a bedroom, so the same carpet ages several times faster.
  • Grit. Abrasive dirt cuts fibre from the base. Doormats and regular vacuuming genuinely add years.
  • Sunlight. Strong sun fades and weakens surface dyed fibre along the window line.

Assumes a decent underlay and normal cleaning. Poor underlay can halve every figure here.

Cost per year, the number worth working out

Divide the fitted price by the realistic lifespan and the comparison changes shape. A cheap carpet on the stairs replaced twice in twelve years usually costs more than a heavy domestic laid once, and involves twice the disruption.

In a bedroom the arithmetic goes the other way, because a budget carpet in a quiet room will genuinely last, so there is little to gain from paying for a heavier grade.

How to add years to whatever you buy

None of this is exotic and all of it works. Vacuum the traffic routes more often than the rest, deal with spills immediately rather than thoroughly later, use a large doormat at every outside door, move furniture slightly twice a year, and have the carpet professionally cleaned every eighteen months or so.

What a wear rating actually tells you

Light, medium, heavy and extra heavy domestic ratings describe the traffic a carpet is built for, not a number of years. A heavy domestic carpet in a light domestic room will last a very long time. A light domestic carpet on a staircase will not, whatever the label promises.

Your questions, answered

How long should a carpet last before it needs replacing?
Between five and twenty years depending almost entirely on the fibre and where it is laid. A budget synthetic on a staircase and a wool blend in a bedroom sit at opposite ends of that range.
Does underlay really affect how long a carpet lasts?
More than almost anything else you can control. A dense underlay stops the pile compressing to the backing, and a poor one can take years off an otherwise good carpet.
Is an expensive carpet cheaper in the long run?
On stairs and in hallways, usually yes, because you fit it once instead of twice. In a spare bedroom it is not, because a budget carpet will outlive the decor anyway.
What does heavy domestic mean on a carpet label?
It describes the level of traffic the carpet is built to take, not a guaranteed number of years. The same rating will last far longer in a quiet room than in a hall.
Does professional cleaning extend a carpet's life?
Yes, because it removes the abrasive grit sitting at the base of the pile that domestic vacuuming leaves behind. Every eighteen months or so is a sensible rhythm in a busy house.
