Caring for a new carpet

Vacuum regularly from the first week, deal with spills by blotting straight away, expect some shedding for the first few weeks, and move furniture slightly now and then so the pile does not compress permanently in one spot.

The first few weeks

New cut pile carpet sheds loose fibres left over from manufacture. This is normal, it is not the carpet falling apart, and it settles down within a few weeks of regular vacuuming.

You may also see pile shading, where areas look lighter or darker depending on the direction the fibres are lying. That is a characteristic of cut pile carpet rather than a fault.

Routine care

Consistency matters more than intensity.

  • Vacuum high traffic areas at least twice a week
  • Use a doormat at every external door to catch grit
  • Blot spills immediately, working inwards, and never rub
  • Move furniture a few centimetres occasionally to spread compression
  • Close curtains in very sunny rooms to slow fading
  • Have it professionally cleaned every year or two, not more

Grit is the real enemy

Most carpet wear is abrasion from grit walked in from outside, which cuts the fibres from below. Doormats and regular vacuuming do more for the life of a carpet than any treatment you can buy.

Common questions

Why is my new carpet shedding?
Loose fibres from manufacturing. It is normal and it stops after a few weeks of vacuuming.
Can I use a beater bar vacuum?
On cut pile usually yes. On loop pile use suction only, because a beater bar can fuzz the loops.
How often should it be professionally cleaned?
Every year or two for a busy household. Over cleaning is its own problem.
Do you fit, or is this a job for me?
Either. We work with trusted, fully vetted local fitters across Kent, and plenty of customers fit smaller rooms themselves and buy supply only.
Will you work out how much I need?
Yes. Bring your room measurements and the team will calculate quantities. Onsite measuring is also available in most Kent areas.
