How to measure a room for carpet
Measure the length and the width at the widest points of the room, including any door recess or alcove, and round up to the nearest ten centimetres. Send those two numbers per room and we will handle the roll width calculation.
Step by step
It takes a few minutes per room and a tape measure. Write it down as you go.
- Measure the length at the longest point, wall to wall
- Measure the width at the widest point, including alcoves and bays
- Include the door recess, because carpet runs under the closed door
- Round both numbers up to the nearest ten centimetres
- Note anything unusual: a chimney breast, a fitted wardrobe, a step
Measuring stairs
Count the treads and note whether the run is straight or has a turn with winders. A straight thirteen tread flight is very different from a flight with a quarter turn, both in material and in labour. If in doubt, take a photograph from the bottom looking up.
When to let us measure
Onsite measuring is available in most Kent areas and it is worth taking up for older houses, bay windows, out of square rooms or anything with winders. A measuring mistake costs more than the visit.

- Either is fine, but metres are easier because carpet is sold per square metre.
- Do I measure the room or the carpet needed?
- Measure the room. We add the roll width allowance so you are not guessing.
- Can I send a photo instead?
- A photo helps, but we still need the two measurements per room to price it.
- Can I get a real price rather than an estimate?

- Why is a warehouse cheaper than a showroom?
- A showroom orders your flooring in from a sample book. We buy clearance deals direct from suppliers and hold the rolls ourselves, so the same specification usually costs less.
