Stain resistant carpet, what it actually does
Stain resistant carpet buys you time. The fibre is made or treated so liquid sits on the surface instead of soaking in, which means a spill blotted quickly comes out. It does not make carpet spill proof, and it does not help if you leave it overnight.
Solution dyed versus treated
Solution dyed fibres have the colour locked into the fibre itself, so bleach cannot strip it out. That is what makes a carpet genuinely bleach cleanable, and it is the most useful property in a family home.
Applied stain treatments coat the fibre instead. They work, but they wear off gradually with cleaning and traffic.
What to do with a spill
Speed matters more than any product.
- Blot with a clean dry cloth, working inwards from the edge
- Never rub, because it pushes the spill into the backing
- Lift solids off first with a spoon or blunt knife
- Rinse with a little cold water and blot again
- Only then reach for a cleaner, and test it somewhere hidden first
