How soon can you put furniture back on a new carpet?
You want to know when the room can be used again after carpet is laid.
Straight away, in most cases. A stretched carpet on underlay is not glued, so there is nothing to set and furniture can go back as soon as the fitter has finished. The exceptions are carpet that has been stuck down with adhesive, which needs the time the adhesive maker states, and heavy pieces, which are best lifted into place rather than dragged so they do not pull the new carpet off its gripper.

Why there is usually no waiting time
Most home carpet is fitted by stretching it over underlay and hooking the edges onto gripper strips. Nothing in that method needs to dry. Once the edges are tucked and the door bars fitted, the carpet is finished. The idea that you must keep off a new carpet for a day comes from glued floors and from hard flooring, not from standard fitted carpet.
Moving furniture back without damage
The risk is not weight, it is movement. Dragging a wardrobe or a sofa with bare feet across new carpet can ruck it, snag loops and, near the walls, pull the edge off the gripper. Two people lifting is always better. Check the bottoms of furniture legs for sharp edges or old metal glides that could catch a loop pile.

About dents
Any carpet will dent under a heavy piece left in one place. A firm underlay helps. When furniture is moved later, dents in most carpets lift with time, gentle brushing against the pile and a little warmth. Wool tends to recover better than some synthetics.
Fitted wardrobes: before or after carpet?
Most fitters prefer fitted wardrobes to go in first, with carpet laid up to the plinth. It means less carpet is bought, the wardrobe sits on a solid floor rather than compressing underlay, and the doors are set at the right height for the finished floor. If wardrobes come later, the fitter can cut the carpet back, but it is harder to do neatly.
The same logic applies to beds with drawers and built-in window seats: tell the fitter what is staying so the plan fits the room.
Planning the day
Clear the room before the fitters arrive, and have somewhere for the furniture to go while they work. Fitting dates are agreed with you when you order, and most in-stock items are delivered within 1 to 3 working days, so there is usually time to plan the move.
Rugs and runners on new carpet
Putting a rug over new carpet is fine, and can protect a heavy walkway in front of a sofa. Use a rug underlay designed for carpet so the rug does not creep across the pile. Avoid rubber-backed mats straight onto some carpets, as certain backings can mark the fibres over time, and lift rugs now and then so the carpet beneath does not fade at a different rate to the rest of the room.
