How much does new carpet cost per square metre in 2026?

Carpet is sold by the square metre, and the fitted cost is made up of four separate things: the carpet, the underlay, the gripper and accessories, and the fitting labour. A quote that gives you only one of those four is not a real price.

The four parts of a carpet price

Almost every disagreement about carpet pricing comes from comparing one part of a quote with all four parts of another. Break the number down before you compare anything.

  • The carpet itself, priced per square metre
  • Underlay, also per square metre, and not optional in practice
  • Gripper, door bars, trims and adhesive
  • Fitting labour, plus any uplift and disposal of the old floor

Why warehouse prices differ from showroom prices

A showroom holds sample books and orders your carpet in. A warehouse holds the actual rolls. We buy clearance deals direct from suppliers, which is why the same specification usually costs less here, and why the range changes week to week.

The trade off is honest: you choose from what is on the floor today rather than from a catalogue of everything ever made. For most people that is a good trade, because thousands of rolls is a lot of choice.

What pushes the price up

Fibre, weight and construction do most of it. Wool costs more than synthetic. A denser, heavier carpet costs more per metre and lasts longer in a busy area. Stairs cost more to fit than a plain square bedroom because the labour is slower.

Room shape matters too. An awkward room can force you to buy more metres than its floor area, because carpet comes in fixed roll widths.

Common questions

Is underlay included in a per square metre price?
Not usually. Always ask whether a quoted rate covers carpet only, or carpet, underlay and fitting.
Is roll end carpet cheaper per metre?
Yes, often significantly, because the remaining length is limited. The carpet itself is the same product.
Do you charge for a quote?
No. Quotes are free and no obligation, from either warehouse.
Why is a warehouse cheaper than a showroom?
A showroom orders your flooring in from a sample book. We buy clearance deals direct from suppliers and hold the rolls ourselves, so the same specification usually costs less.
What payment methods can I use?
Cash, all major credit and debit cards, Amex and bank transfer.
