Cost to carpet stairs: build the whole quotation

Plan the materials and fitting scope for a staircase without confusing floor area with the carpet you need to buy.

The cost to carpet stairs is the price of the required carpet cut, underlay and accessories, plus the agreed preparation and fitting. Step shape, turns, the landing and pile direction affect the quantity and work. Compare a complete staircase quotation, not a room rate multiplied by the visible tread area.

Start with the staircase, not a price per step

Count the steps, note any turns and draw the landing outline. Identify wedge-shaped winders, half-landings and doorway recesses. A straight flight and a turning staircase can have similar step counts but require different cuts. State whether carpet should cover the treads and risers fully, and where it finishes.

Record the measurements you have and distinguish them from anything still to be checked. Onsite measuring is available in most Kent areas. Photographs clarify the stair shape but cannot establish every dimension or authorise the final cut.

The cutting plan is a separate cost factor

The floor area you can see is not necessarily the quantity you will buy. Carpet comes from a roll, and the stair pieces must be arranged within its available width and length. Pile direction affects both appearance and the layout. Winders and the landing can alter how efficiently the pieces fit together. Ask for the required carpet quantity to be shown, rather than assuming every offcut can be turned around or used on the next step.

A roll end may offer value when its dimensions, construction and orientation suit the whole plan. Check it against the staircase before choosing from the ticket price. If you want the landing and nearby rooms to match, include them in the enquiry from the beginning. A piece suitable for the flight alone may not leave enough correctly oriented material for the connected floor.

Choose the specification before comparing totals

Ask for a carpet intended for stair use and compare its density, fibre, backing and care instructions. The pile bends around the nosing, so a soft feel on a flat sample does not settle suitability. A twist or loop category gives you a starting point, but the individual product's recommendation matters. Discuss pets and cleaning requirements too, especially where claws could catch loops or a particular cleaner is important to the household.

The cheapest rate per square metre is not automatically the lowest complete stair carpet cost. A suitable cut with a straightforward layout may make better use of the budget than a lower-priced piece that cannot cover the turns. Compare like-for-like specifications and quantities, then decide whether a different colour or available clearance piece would make a sensible alternative.

List underlay and finishing materials separately

Underlay is stocked at both warehouses. Choose it with the selected carpet and stair shape, taking account of support rather than thickness alone. Existing underlay should be assessed for condition and compatibility instead of being treated as a saving automatically. Ask whether gripper, fixing materials and landing thresholds are included, and how the new floor will meet adjoining rooms. Where a nearby door may catch the combined carpet and underlay height, identify that before the fitting scope is agreed.

These details make the quotation easier to compare. If one offer includes new underlay and accessories while another covers only carpet and labour, their headline totals do not describe the same job. Keep the product names and quantities beside each line so you can see which changes genuinely reduce the price and which simply remove part of the work.

Separate fitting from preparation and other work

Carpet fitting for stairs involves shaping and fixing the material around each tread, riser and turn. The labour scope should identify the staircase and landing rather than relying on a generic room description. Kent Carpet Warehouse arranges fitting through trusted, fully vetted local fitters, who are not employed staff. Supply only is also an option if you are using your own fitter and have agreed the required measurements with them.

Ask who will lift the old carpet, remove waste and deal with any worn or loose stair components. Structural repairs should be resolved separately before the new covering goes down. Explain access and any occupied-room constraints, but do not assume a date or additional task is included merely because fitting appears on the quote. The useful comparison is the complete work agreed for your staircase.

Compare two stair quotations on the same basis

Check carpet specification, purchased quantity, landing coverage, underlay, accessories, preparation, fitting and disposal. Another property's average cannot settle your quotation. Stair runners have different coverage, finishing and fitting requirements, so their advertised cost is not a direct replacement price.

Send the staircase outline and carpet preferences using the enquiry form, or call a warehouse. Our stair carpet fitting page explains supply and arranged fitting; the fitting-cost guide covers labour quotations. Ask for the complete staircase purchase to be itemised before agreeing the order.

Your questions, answered

How much does it cost to carpet stairs and a landing?
The total depends on the required carpet cut, the landing shape, the chosen underlay and accessories, and preparation and fitting. Include the landing in the same measured quotation instead of adding a generic room allowance.
Why can two stair carpet prices differ with the same step count?
Turns, winders, widths, landing coverage and the cutting layout can differ. The carpet specification and included preparation also change what each quotation is pricing.
Can a remnant reduce my stair carpet cost?
It may, if the piece is suitable for stairs and large enough for the cutting plan in the correct pile direction. Its area or ticket price alone cannot establish that it fits.
Should fitting and old carpet removal be separate quote lines?
Ask for the scope to be clear. Fitting, uplift and disposal are different tasks, and comparing prices is easier when each included task is identified.
Is a stair runner price comparable with full stair carpet?
Not directly. Coverage, edge finishing and fitting scope differ, so compare quotations for the same type of staircase covering.
