What am I likely to spend on carpet for this room?

You want a realistic total for a specific room at a specific quality level.

Carpet is best budgeted as a fitted price per room rather than a rate per metre. Across the UK a small bedroom in a budget range typically lands in the low hundreds fitted, while a large living room in a heavy domestic wool can be several times that. Quality tier moves the number far more than room size does.

The four quality tiers, in plain terms

Carpet marketing uses a lot of words. Underneath them, the trade thinks in tiers, and the tier tells you what to expect from the carpet in five years rather than on the day it is laid.

  • Budget synthetic. Light polypropylene, fine for a spare room, a rental turnaround or a room that will be redecorated soon.
  • Mid range synthetic. Heavier polypropylene or polyamide, usually stain resistant, the workhorse of most family homes.
  • Heavy domestic synthetic. Dense twist pile built for stairs, hallways and busy living rooms.
  • Wool and wool blend. Eighty twenty wool blends resist crushing, hold colour and feel different underfoot. The premium tier and the one that ages best.

Room by room, what people actually spend

The table below gives fitted ranges including carpet, underlay and labour for typical UK rooms. They are ranges rather than quotes because roll width, room shape and fitting access all move the total.

Where to put the money if the budget is fixed

If you have one pot of money for the whole house, spend it in the order the traffic falls. Hallway and stairs first, living room second, main bedroom third, everything else last. A budget carpet in a spare bedroom will still look fine in a decade because almost nobody walks on it.

Doing it the other way round, a beautiful wool in a rarely used dining room and a thin synthetic on the stairs, is the single most common budgeting mistake we see at the counter.

Why the same room can be quoted twice as high

Roll width waste, awkward shapes, stair type, whether the old floor comes up, and whether underlay is in the number at all. Two quotes on the same room can be genuinely different jobs. Ask for the breakdown and the gap usually explains itself in about a minute.

Your questions, answered

Is it cheaper to carpet the whole house at once?
Often yes, because one fitting visit spreads the labour and one delivery covers the lot. It also lets you use roll ends on the smaller rooms while there is still a length of them left.
Should every room have the same carpet?
There is no need. Most houses we price use two or three different carpets, with the heavier one on the stairs, landing and hallway where the traffic is.
Does a bigger room cost proportionally more?
Not always. A large room that fits neatly inside a roll width can waste less carpet than a small awkward one, so the price per square metre can actually fall as the room grows.
Is wool worth the extra over a good synthetic?
It depends on how long you plan to keep it. Wool holds its pile and colour longer and feels warmer, but a heavy domestic synthetic twist in a busy family house is the more practical buy for many people.
Do your prices change week to week?
The stock does, so yes. We buy clearance deals direct from suppliers, which is why the range on the floor is different every week and why it is worth ringing before you drive over for something specific.
